Counting All As Loss

Isaiah Chapter 6:8-13

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!” 9 He said, “Go and tell this people: ” ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ 10 Make the heart of this people calloused; make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” 11 Then I said, “For how long, O Lord?” And he answered: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left deserted and the fields ruined and ravaged, 12 until the LORD has sent everyone far away and the land is utterly forsaken. 13 And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste. But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.

I want you to notice a kingdom principle that we have pretty much lost sight of. That is that God cannot let us see and understand the things of His kingdom until we have totally come to the end of ourselves, until our “hearts of flesh” are completely annihilated. When Isaiah asked God how long this was to go on, God responded with “Not till the existing Israel has been annihilated”.  We have all experienced times in our lives when we have begged God for understanding, yet because we were asking in the flesh, God could not let us see or understand.

You see, God cannot let us turn and be healed and understand His kingdom until we surrender. Many times we try to select the parts of us that we are willing to let God “destroy”. There are parts of our belief system that we don’t want God to touch… areas of our lives that we know that if we let God have His way, He would change. So we hold back a tenth and wonder why God isn’t “Coming through for us”, or why we feel like we aren’t receiving the Grace we need for the trial. God told Isaiah, “And though a tenth remains in the land, it will again be laid waste”. In other words, until you are all in and holding nothing back, you will experience the “destruction” over and over and over.

That is not the end though!! Look at the glorious promise that God gave! ”But as the terebinth and oak leave stumps when they are cut down, so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.” Once you surrender all, once all of yourself is cut down; God says that His HOLY SEED will remain in your land as a stump.

Isaiah 11:1-3a tells us who that Holy seed and stump are.

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him– the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD– 3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.

This is not a gift but an inheritance. A gift is worn on the outer man; an inheritance is planted deep inside— like a seed. Yet even though it is such a small planting, this planting grows and, in time, fills all the inner man. ~Gene Edwards (A Tale Of Three King)
