Weekly DOH Thrift Store Update

6:00-7:00 a.m. The alarm begins to screech its siren saying it is time to rise and embrace the new morning. We go about our individual morning routines and prepare to leave the cabins at 7:30 a.m. Between dodging semis, trying not to miss our exits, and singing loudly and slightly off key to songs, our thirty minute trip to the store can be quite an adventure! We make our grand entrance at the store at 8:00 a.m.

After unloading all of our items in the break room,  we begin our morning cleaning routine of dry mopping and putting all of the products back in their designated area. Occasionally, we will have several carts of merchandise to put out on the floor. Around 8:30 a.m., we gather in the break room for staff devotions. SInce we have this nifty thing called electronics, we have begun a study on our Bible app entitled “Elisha: Tale of Ridiculous Faith”.  During our devotional time, we have a rule that if anyone’s cell phone rings that person has to treat everyone to a box of Krispy Kreme donuts! This rule has lead to some sneakiness. When leaving the room, we always need to take caution of the whereabouts of our phone because it is very likely that the volume on your phone will be turned onto high.

Our store opens its doors at 9:00 a.m. One of us girls takes register from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Each of us are assigned to a different department that we are in charge of, and during this time, we  work on whatever department needs the most attention at that time. Everyday our work varies as to what we do. Processing donations, sorting clothes, cleaning housewares, and stocking the shelves are all  part of the thrifty work day. 12:00-12:45 p.m. is one of our favorite times of the day.. Lunch Time!! After we are done chowing down and relaxing, we get back into working on getting production done. The person on register gets to take their break from 1:00- 1:45 p.m. and the next person is on register from 1:00-5:00 p.m. or whenever the last customer leaves. We have a short fifteen minute break at 3:00 p.m. and then back to work we go!

Our work day ends at 5:00 p.m., and we make the trek back home whenever the last customer leaves and we can close everything down. Evenings after work are far from boring!  There are rare evenings when we stay at home. We have been so blessed with people pouring out their love in different ways such as providing lovely evenings of dinner and talks, youth/church events, fun with friends, wonderful small group time, and much more! Thrifty life can be challenging, but when we look at the bigger picture of all the lives we have the opportunity to touch, it makes every second worth it.
